The ASICS Gel-Lyte III ’07 Remastered in Shigeyuki Mitsui Orange Cream is a tribute to both the silhouette’s 35th anniversary and the retirement of its original designer, Shigeyuki Mitsui, who created the split-tongue construction in 1990 as a practical fix for tongue slippage during running. That split tongue became ASICS’ most recognizable design feature, and Mitsui’s signature is embroidered directly onto it here, making the connection between creator and invention literal and visible.
The coral-themed colorway carries dual significance. In Japanese, the number 35 is pronounced san-go, which also means coral, so the color scheme functions as both anniversary marker and linguistic tribute chosen by Mitsui himself. The upper combines turquoise and teal hairy suede on the mudguard and heel overlays with cream suede across the toe box and lace panels. Orange carved leather Tiger Stripes run across the midsole with textures mimicking coral reef formations, and coral reef artwork appears on the insoles.
This is the first general release of the Remastered construction format, previously limited to collaborations like the 2023 Kith x ASICS partnership. The Remastered build uses upgraded materials, richer detailing, a chunkier toe shape, and more padded collar compared to standard releases. The ’07 designation specifically references the preferred 2007-era Gel-Lyte III construction that collectors favor for its fuller toe profile and collar padding, giving the shoe a more substantial feel. Building this tribute on that exact ’07 architecture was a deliberate mark of respect for the original designer.
